Majeh's Rant of the Week: Issue 3

Post by Majeh[NU] on Mon Jun 28, 2010 7:52 am

A Lack Of Common Decency

Or

"Wait For Me, I'm Coming!"

QCon. Short for Queen's Convention. It's just your typical anime/gaming convention, but it's held in Northern Ireland. Yes, we do have one anime convention in Northern Ireland. So I know a few people who go to it, it's fun. One of my best friends goes to it and sadly, as she lives far away, it's really the only time I get to see her. I wish I could see her more often, really I do, but unfortunately it just never works out. We still talk a lot, which is nice, but spending time together in person is just... well... it's more personal, more intimate I guess. It's nice to be able to sit together, to play games and be insulted to my face because she's better at them ( I hope she doesn't see me admitting this Razz ), to talk and laugh at the same time, or to get a hug from the other etc. It's hard to describe. To simplify this, I love spending time with her no matter how we do it (msn, text, phone or in person).

So everything is fine. We hang out for a while on the first day which is nice. It's always great to see her again. We talk pretty much everyday, so it's always exciting when we do meet up face to face again. I may, perhaps, be lying if I said there was more than one reason why I went haha. But yeah, you get what I mean. We were both pretty busy on the first day and, seeing as it wasn't running for very long, we didn't get to hang out all that much. But that's ok, because we still have Saturday (the longest day) left. It opened from 10 am until 11 pm. What could go wrong?

So, I end up on the phone to another of my friends, someone I considered a good friend. I suppose I still will in a few weeks when I've gotten over the whole "next time I see him, I'll knock him out" mentality. We're talking and discussing QCon. I told him what time it started, when it ended, what all was happening there etc. He then expressed a lot of interest in coming. I easily got the impression that he wanted to go, given that he told me. So he said he was busy at the minute, and that he'd phone me back later. Fair enough, I was eating lunch at the time. I had the intention of going at about 2 pm. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and left it until about 4 or 5. He still hadn't phoned me back. Getting quite confused by this, I phoned him. He was most definitely awake and up.

Despite me telling him earlier that we could get food up there, and him agreeing to that, he had started defrosting his dinner. Alright, no need to panic. He'll probably be done at about 6, right? That's still 5 hours up there. He's fun to hang out with, he's a pretty decent guy, I'll let him eat his dinner. For all I know he hasn't eaten all day. So at about 6:30 I phone him again, "Are you coming? Have you finished your dinner?". "No" he responds. Getting rather annoyed, I ask him when he'll be done. He replies with "I don't know". Ok, now getting really annoyed, I persist. "Have you any idea?" I ask him. He goes off to ask him mom, or rather, shouts and doesn't get a response. He says "Hold on, I'll go ask her, I'll phone back." With no real other choice, I wait, how long does it take for him to ask him mom, about 5 minutes? Apparently he's still asking her, as I still haven't gotten a response. Not even a "sorry mate, I wasn't able to go". Idiot.

So, this may look to you like I have a useless "friend" who doesn't reply and ends up costing me a day of wandering aimlessly around an anime convention, laughing at poorly made cosplays and hyperactive children carrying plushies which are almost the size of them. But no, that is not the case here. His own lack of any common decency, his lack of any thought as to whether he was actually coming, and a complete lack of any display of friendship or care has cost me so much more. I missed the one day out of the whole year where I would have had a good amount of time to spend with someone really important to me. One of the most important people to me. Someone I honestly am proud to say is one of my two best friends (the other is like a brother to me, he's on holiday at the minute or I would have gone with him). So yeah, thanks mate, now I will most likely have to wait another year until I see her again. Shame you couldn't have just said "not going" at the start.

Don't tempt me. I'm absolutely furious.

This guy is a perfect example of what is wrong with the world today, or one of the main things. People just don't care about eachother. He could easily have avoided it by saying "I don't wanna go" or "I'm not going to be able to" instead of making me think he was going to. And he didn't even seem to care that he'd wasted my one chance. I really am close to beating him senseless.
